Use of an Electronic Compliance-Monitoring Packaging Solution
in Opioid Substitution Treatment

Background

Abuse of medicinal opioids is a problem in many Western countries
Buprenorphine is used in substitution treatment for opioid-addiction, but is abused in spite of a recent formulation with the opioid antagonist naloxone

Monitoring by microchip as help to improve treatment-compliance

Registration of removal (date, time) of tablets from a pre-filled package (PharmaDDSi) shows some promise as a method for reduction of drug diversion from substitution treatment (Tacke et al. 2009, submitted for publication)
The development of real-time surveillance by RFID-technology could offer a better control of compliance than weekly review of the registered time-cues.
