HCPC Europe Columbus Award for
Compliance Enhancing Packaging Design 2013

During Fleming Europe’s Pharma Packaging & Labelling Compliance Conference held on March 19th – 20th in Berlin, HCPC Europe presented the finalists of the Columbus Award for Compliance Enhancing Packaging Design 2013.

Innovative packaging solutions with elements to help patients to take their medications as prescribed were presented and the Columbus Award was given to the solution that, according to the jury, offered the most comprehensive support.

Out of a large numbers of entries the jury short-listed the following three outstanding packaging solutions for the award:

ecoslide – RX – the natural evolution of compliance packaging from Walmart and Keystone Folding Box
A child-resistant, senior-friendly and eco-friendly compliance package. A secondary package that contains no plastic component, sustainable design – 100% recyclable and compostable, requires a minimal amount of film and foil, cost-effective – fulfillment/automation at high speed > 200 per minute.

JANUVIA® 100mg – packaging innovation focused on user-friendly handling from Merck & Co. Inc, and Burgopak Healthcare & Technology
Merck’s Januvia is the first product to be launched in Burgopak’s F=1 child resistant design. The pack effectively stops children accessing the medication whilst prompting compliance through easy access to the foil blister, whilst delivering a calendarized format and keeping medication and carton connected.

LiDoCon – the Liquid Dosing Concept from Abbott Healthcare (PVT), Limited
“LiDiCon” – a variable integrated dosing device for liquid syrups which involves 3 simple steps for accurate dosing and dispensing of liquids. Thereby addressing many problems associated earlier with dosing such as possible spillage, contamination due to multiple openings/closings of bottles, maintaining separate dosing device till the last dose and cumbersome liquid dispensing steps in busy lifestyles. Further, this is a simple dosing device made up of pharma grade plastic and elastomeric materials free from metal components unlike the complex sprig/valve loaded mechanism.
